About the Workshop

Learn how to run fair, confident and defensible grievance and disciplinary hearings.
This practical half‑day workshop is designed for anyone responsible for hearing employee concerns or making disciplinary decisions, giving you the tools to manage sensitive cases with clarity, confidence, and compliance.

The course is delivered through instructor-led learning, with explanations, demonstrations and real workplace insights that help bring the content to life. Our trainers draw on extensive experience in investigations, HR and organisational decision making to give you clear guidance you can apply

This event is an in-person event. If you would prefer a bespoke course for your organisation, go to our Work With Us page.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
During the workshop, participants will explore the full hearing process from preparation through to decision making, building the confidence and clarity needed to manage grievance and disciplinary hearings fairly and consistently.

The Role of the Hearing Manager
Understand your responsibilities and boundaries during grievance and disciplinary processes. We cover independence, impartiality, avoiding predetermination, and how to apply your own judgement when assessing evidence.

Fair & Defensible Hearings
Learn the structure of grievance and disciplinary hearings, how to prepare effectively, how to set expectations, and how to run the meeting calmly and professionally. Includes questioning, handling difficult conversations and managing adjournments.

Procedural Fairness, ACAS Code & Legal Risk
Explore what makes a process fair, how tribunals assess reasonableness, and how to avoid common pitfalls that lead to claims. Includes case law examples, documentation standards, and the “range of reasonable responses”

Reasoned Decisions & Proportionate Outcomes

Learn how to reach clear, evidence‑based grievance and disciplinary outcomes. We cover findings, mitigation, consistency, proportionality, and how to write defensible rationales that stand up to scrutiny.
Appeals & Avoiding Common Mistakes
Understand the purpose and scope of appeals, typical grounds, how to handle new evidence, and how to test the fairness of an earlier decision. We also explore the most common pitfalls for hearing managers—and how to avoid them.

Why this matters?
A well‑run hearing maintains fairness, protects relationships, and reduces risk.
A poorly run hearing can damage trust, expose the organisation to costly claims, and undermine confidence in your processes.
This workshop gives you the clarity, structure and confidence to manage hearings that are:

-
Fair
-
Consistent
-
Well‑documented
-
Legally defensible
-
Employee‑centred but risk‑aware

Participants leave with practical tools, improved technique, and greater confidence in the role of hearing manager.

Why choose this course?
Gain practical skills: This is not just theory. You will build the practical skills needed to run hearings that are fair, consistent and defensible, with guidance that reflects real challenges faced in grievance and disciplinary cases..

Hands-on training: You will take part in guided discussions and instructor-led learning that reflect real hearing processes. This helps you develop good preparation, effective questioning, sound evidence evaluation and clear decision making, all of which are areas tribunals regularly scrutinise.

Relevant for every level: Whether you are new to hearing meetings or looking to strengthen your approach, this workshop addresses the challenges hearing managers most often face, including managing difficult conversations, applying the balance of probabilities and avoiding common procedural mistakes.

Learn from industry leaders: Our trainers bring extensive experience from investigations, HR, and organisational ethics. You will gain insight into what tribunals expect, where organisations often go wrong, and how to ensure your hearings meet ACAS standards and can withstand internal or external challenge.
